You can't talk about Midoun without mentioning Djerbahood. In 2014, the neighbouring village of Erriadh was transformed into an unprecedented collective artwork: over 250 artists from about thirty countries painted the white house façades, creating one of the largest open-air street-art projects ever undertaken in the world (rated 4.8/5 by visitors). You can happily lose yourself in alleys where every corner holds a surprise — giant portraits, dreamlike scenes, fantastical animals — in a village that's still very much alive, with its shops and daily life continuing around the artworks. Access is free. Come early morning for the best light, before the heat, and take time to chat with residents: many know the story behind the artwork painted on their own house.

The Ghriba synagogue, the oldest still-active synagogue in Africa

Steps from Djerbahood, the Ghriba synagogue, in Erriadh (Hara Sghira), is the oldest still-active synagogue in Africa — a place of worship in uninterrupted use for centuries for one of the last Jewish communities in the Arab world. Its typically Djerban architecture, with white vaults and blue columns, houses an interior richly decorated with faience and stained glass. Every year, during the Lag BaOmer festival, it draws several thousand pilgrims from across North Africa and the diaspora. Entry is free (donations welcome), but a passport is mandatory — an ID card is not enough — and a security check should be expected at the entrance, as with many sensitive places of worship worldwide. Dress appropriately: a headscarf or kippah is available on loan if needed. The synagogue closes Friday afternoon and Saturday for Shabbat.

On Midoun's tourist road, Djerba Explore brings together several attractions in half a day. The Crocodile Farm, one of the largest in North Africa, houses over 400 Nile crocodiles in a landscaped setting, with a raised walkway winding above the enclosures and feeding sessions at set times, much loved by children. The site also includes Lalla Hadria and Djerba Heritage, an orchard-set museum village showcasing the island's traditional architecture and crafts — weaving, pottery, olive oil production. Expect 25 to 30 dinars for adult entry, open 9am to 6pm in summer. Ask about feeding times on arrival, as it's the visit's most spectacular moment, and bring water: the site is very exposed to the sun in the afternoon.

For a more unusual outing, Ranch du Lagon offers guided camel treks across the sandy trails of the island's south, between olive groves, palm groves and encounters with locals and their herds. The route, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the package, leads to the blue lagoon near Seguia beach — an ideal setting to unwind and take photos. Expect €30 to €40 depending on the package, hotel transfer generally included. Several neighbouring ranches offer a very similar excursion: better to confirm the price and transfer arrangements at time of booking.

The beaches of Midoun

Sidi Mahrez is THE beach most cited by travel guides as emblematic of Djerba, and for good reason: several kilometres of fine, light sand along the northeast coast, shallow water shifting from turquoise to jade depending on the light, and a long row of hotels, restaurants and water-sports clubs — jet-ski, windsurfing, parasailing. Very lively in high season, it remains freely accessible to the public even in front of the large hotel complexes. For more peace and quiet, favour the northern stretch of the beach, less crowded than the central area in front of the big hotels.

A little further south, near Vincci Helios Beach, Sidi Yati beach — known as Yéti 2 — ranks among the most popular on the east coast. Light sand, turquoise water and open views, with a few beach shelters and restaurants without overdevelopment (rated 4.2/5). There's a very similar neighbouring beach, Yéti 1, the difference mainly being the amount of rocks when entering the water. Blue Lagoon and Marsa Seguia marina are immediately nearby. Come early morning to swim peacefully before the excursions and families arrive at midday; free parking is available nearby if driving.

Where to eat in Midoun

On Sidi Mahrès beach, Plaza Sea Lounge is the Djerba Plaza hotel's beach bar — a popular address for lunch or a cocktail with your feet in the fine sand, with beach shelters named after secret spots on the island as a nod to local spirit. Generous Mediterranean cuisine, cocktails and sunset over the sea in the late afternoon: the atmosphere is elegant without excess, livelier in the evening with a DJ in high season. Come rather in the late afternoon to enjoy the sunset in a still-calm atmosphere, and book if planning to have lunch there in high season.

Djerba La Perla, fresh grilled fish right on the sand

Head to Taguermess beach, about six kilometres from Midoun, for Djerba La Perla, a grill restaurant set directly on the sand. The concept is simple: fresh fish prepared to order, in a relaxed setting with a sea view — some customers even say you can swim between courses. The family atmosphere and good value for money make it a popular address for lunch or a sunset dinner. The grilled fish is nearly unanimously praised; the only recurring gripe is fries considered a bit greasy.

For a sweet break, on Rue Ali Belhaouane, Les Délices de Djerba (Pâtisserie Pizzeria Ben Omrane) is a local institution well-known enough to serve as a landmark in directions given by residents. You'll find a wide choice of oriental pastries — baklava and syrup-soaked sweets, gazelle horns, makrouds — as well as pizzas, on a small budget. A simple, well-established address, to slip in between two visits rather than a culinary destination in itself.

Where to sleep in Midoun

Vincci Helios Beach spans nine hectares on the seafront, in Midoun's tourist zone. The establishment blends a central building, traditional menzels around patios, and exclusive bungalows with direct beach access and private pool. An outdoor pool, a covered heated pool, a spa with hammam, a kids' club and an evening disco round out an offering designed for family or friends' stays, on an all-inclusive basis, from around €40 a night depending on the season. Book a bungalow room if you want the private pool and the most direct beach access, and check recent reviews before booking, as maintenance is considered uneven depending on the period.

For a more relaxation-focused stay, César Thalasso & Conventions, a 4-star hotel set in a palm grove, offers a full thalassotherapy centre — hammams, hydromassage baths, various treatments — a few minutes' walk from Sidi Mahrez beach and not far from Djerba Golf Club. Air-conditioned rooms with balcony, several pools including an indoor one, a private fine-sand beach with sunbeds and parasols. Reviews vary depending on the rooms assigned, as is often the case in large complexes; some offers are adults-only, a point to confirm depending on the package chosen.
